More re the urban forest. I have learned from a tree specialist that our maple trees need a LOT more water than they usually get. We could better care for them if we gave them regular deep soaks during our warm seasons. That should extend their lives. And I love the idea of more public gardens.

  Concerning the Urban forest.

When the city cuts down old trees has it looked at selling the marketable wood as hardwood lumber to create a new income steam? The tree species are quite exotic for Montana and may fetch a decent price from cabinet shops and wood workers.

I really like the idea of turning unused public land into more garden space. This could be a way for the city to grow food for the hungry and increase the income for the parks department through garden lease plots. I bet the courts could send quite a few people needing to fill community service hours to work the public food gardens as well. These individuals might even discover helping people to be a more satisfying act in place of getting into bar fights and petty thievery. If I remember correctly about 7-8 years ago the gardener for the U of M planted food instead of flowers around campus one spring. They grew hundreds if not thousands of pounds of food for the food bank and UC. The gardens were also beautiful to look at.

  Sincerely,

  David V. Gray
