It's an OK article. I think many (not me necessarily) would argue that
government distortion of the market, and government mandated changes in
lending practices lead to the bubble in the first place -- but that will be
debated for years. In terms of the "sustainability" buzz word. How about
something tangible and concrete to deal with. What are you suggesting Council do
to make Missoula sustainable? Many people who have lost jobs in our town
recently, would argue that we are well below "sustainable" in terms of economic
activity. The many empty and blighted buildings throughout Missoula would
support their position.

Subject: [MissoulaGov] Council goals: On sustainability

“Growth for the sake of growth is the ideology of the cancer cell.”
- Edward Abbey
I think the single best response to the request for ideas and commentary
on goals for our city council was John Wolverton’s message that places
sustainability at the heart of whatever strategy guides specific choices.
And this article from the NYT offers yet another reminder of the lessons
every government leader should be learning from our nation’s current
crisis:
http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/02/10/slumburbia/
It ends with this nugget of wisdom: “Come see: this is what happens when
money and market, alone, guide the way we live.”
