Subject: [MissoulaGov] Bike lanes on Higgins and Orange

Jim Sayer from Adventure Cycling organized a meeting today between the MDOT folks and a number of the parties interested in bike lanes downtown. Jason and I were there from the council, Steve king from engineering, MRA and MDA and a few other parties were represented. I thought it was a real positive discussion. This summer they will be repaving the section of Higgins from the bridge to Broadway. There was consensus in the room that there should be bike lanes when it gets striped. The road section is 66 feet across. So they can do two ten foot lanes, a five and half foot bike lane, and a seven and a half foot parking space on each side. The DOT guys said they generally prefer bigger lanes but they are OK with ten feet. The district administrator, Doug Moeller, said that for now on they would always make a point of considering the bike infrastructure up front on every project they do in Missoula. This was great news.

I also learned that they are going to redo the section of Orange from Broadway to the bridge. It may be possible to put in bike lanes on this stretch if we take out the four or five parking spaces. That will need some further consideration. I bike this stretch almost every day and it is pretty narrow.
