Bob,

You are correct, currently nine additional hydrants are needed in the Franklin-to-Fort area. To answer the questions you received:

1) F2F is short fire hydrants? I assume that this means that there are some houses in this neighborhood to which fire hoses simply will not reach?! Tell me this isn't as serious of a public safety issue as it sounds.

The national standard for hydrant spacing is a minimum of 500 feet. This area has deficiencies in hydrant spacing and this effort is to fill those gaps as best we can. This deficiency does not mean that fire hoses will not reach a particular house, it does mean that it will take much longer and may require more resources (additional engines) to develop the water supply when needed. Basically, the greater the distance (between the hydrant and the fire), the more time it takes to create an adequate supply of water. The fire department considers inadequate hydrant spacing to be a serious fire and life safety issue.

2) What is it about the installation of fire hydrants that make them cost $10k per?

There is much more to a hydrant than what is seen on the surface. The hydrant valve and piping extend well below the ground surface to avoid freezing. To supply the hydrant with water, a connection must be made to the water main and piping must then be extended to the hydrant. This involves removal of asphalt from the street and digging a trench several feet deep. The further the water main is from the hydrant, the greater the cost will be. The price includes the costs of excavation, the hydrant itself and other necessary piping, valves and other materials, asphalt replacement, and labor.

We hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you need anything further.

Hi Jason,

I received a couple questions regarding the hydrants. Can you answer them? Also, please confirm the accuracy about my comment regarding the need for nine hydrants. I got that from the public comment but did not verify the info.

Greetings,

This morning we opened with a bid to install three fire hydrants in the Franklin to the Fort neighborhood. We have $30,000 allocated for the project. It is unclear if we can get all three for that amount. There are about nine that are needed but they will have to be done over a few years as funds become available.
