[Brent's original post was too big for the list.]

Interested citizens,

Attached is a flyer that has been circulating along with a petition to
stop the process of updating our zoning ordinance that we have all
invested so much time and effort into crafting. The flyer highlights
several issues contained in the new ordinance that some folks don't agree
with. My concern is that the new ordinance represents a vast
improvement over the existing ordinance and throwing the whole thing out
represents a huge setback in our efforts to improve zoning in Missoula.
We have come together to help craft an ordinance that will provide
protections to existing neighborhoods while allowing for the thoughtful
design of new neighborhoods. The proposed ordinance does this by
finding middle ground on many of the issues.

The circulators of this petition appear to feel the existing ordinance
provides better protection for the neighborhoods. How could this be
true? The existing ordinance is the reason we have had significant
conflict over zoning issues in our community. Neighborhoods have been
fighting against it's outcomes for a very long time. Are these folks
really serving in the best interest of our neighborhoods? It is time
for a change in the zoning ordinance that provides real protections.

I urge you to contact your City Council representative and let them know
we need a new zoning ordinance for Missoula. Please also turn out in
support at the public hearing on June 22. We need to have a strong
turn-out of supporters for a new ordinance.
