This can be problematic since a bike locked to a meter may block the
motorist using the meter from the sidewalk. I know the Parking Commission
recognizes this and for this reason does not encourage cyclists to lock up
to meters. Another need is to be mindful of all the stuff we ask sidewalks
to accommodateBike racks, meters, sign and utility poles, sandwich board
signs, café tables, benches, etc. Each alone is a benefit and/or add to the
charm and utility of Downtown. Certainly there is a limit, however, to how
much stuff we should put on the sidewalks. People may still want to walk on
them!.

Sorry - Several people in the audience commented on my face during the
discussion. I for one am a fan of our current meters. I appreciate in large
cities, there are so many that it presents a visual blight. Personally, I
like how our meters look. They have an old-timey look and sometimes double
as additional bike parking. I'm assuming that the talk is of a modernization
to a parking "kiosk" that accepts coins, dollar bills, credit cards. This
may be preferable to some, but I prefer to get out of my car, put a few
coins in the meter located just in front of or behind my vehicle and be on
my way. I know it seems like the epitome of laziness, but I don't want to go
to a central location in the block, buy my parking ticket and go back to my
car and put it on my dashboard. I suspect there are others out there who
feel the way I do. Likewise, there are others who would probably prefer to
not worry about having coins.
