[MissoulaGov] Committee Update 12-2-09

I'm with Pam on the meter issue. A vending machine that dispensed change
from dollars or cards would be handy at times. In weather like today I want
to be out of the car, pay the meter and get into the store ASAP not hiking
to a card machine that is working at the time.

Sorry - Several people in the audience commented on my face during the
discussion. I for one am a fan of our current meters. I appreciate in large
cities, there are so many that it presents a visual blight. Personally, I
like how our meters look. They have an old-timey look and sometimes double
as additional bike parking. I'm assuming that the talk is of a modernization
to a parking "kiosk" that accepts coins, dollar bills, credit cards. This
may be preferable to some, but I prefer to get out of my car, put a few
coins in the meter located just in front of or behind my vehicle and be on
my way. I know it seems like the epitome of laziness, but I don't want to go
to a central location in the block, buy my parking ticket and go back to my
car and put it on my dashboard. I suspect there are others out there who
feel the way I do. Likewise, there are others who would probably prefer to
not worry about having coins.

One or two meters per block face. They would take plastic as well as coins.

What's a "consolidated meter system"?

One question we didn't ask during the committee meeting - will the parking
meters be moved out to the new street curbing? There were some scrunched
faces (mine was one) on council at the future possibility of a consolidated
meter system.
