I have to admit enjoying a chuckle or two as I read the reports, but also
hope you don't invite too much negativity. Am reminded of a favorite
Charlie Brown-wrapped-up-in-his-kite-in-a-tree poster, "Good humor makes all
things bearable."
On to other topics -- Wednesday's PW meeting discussion on leaf removal. I
appreciated and chuckled at Ed's remarks about the difficulty of
enforcement (cars on the street during leaf removal days) -- that fines had
been tried, but people complainedn so CC, wanting to keep everybody happy,
dropped it. I think it makes sense to do two things: (1) as several
members suggested, put out the orange cones & signs the day before and day
of pickup and (2) tow away & fine cars on the street. Maybe knocking on
doors & reminding could be done by people working off public service hours.
I do keep the leaf pickup days on my calendar and try to get my leaves out
on the street just before the scheduled pickup, but due to numerous factors,
one can't depend on an exact day. Moreover, a visitor to the neighborhood,
ignorant of the pickup schedule, might park in front of my house. So bright
orange signs at all intersections of the area should help. When leaves stay
in the street too long they cause parking problems, and moreover, too
often either obstruct the bike lanes or cars are parked in the bike lanes
due to piles of leaves at the curbside. Maybe the whole education effort
should shift slightly and emphasize leaf pickup is for boulevard leaves and
not for the general convenience of people like me who find it easier to rake
towards the street instead of bagging or putting on my compost pile. It's a
nice service, but maybe more than we need. Ethel
