Message-ID: <279FCFB3C05E664E9886A46BB5625D6D0511A23F03@gimli.morehead-st.edu> Please take a moment to help protect KY preschool funding! See below for details. Forwarded on behalf of KYDEC. [http://act.prichardcommittee.org/images/content/pagebuilder/10932.jpg] Dear Friends, Kentucky's two-year budgeting process is under way in the General Assembly, and we need to ensure that Governor Beshear's proposed increase in preschool funding remains in the budget as it is considered in the House and Senate. The governor protected preschool funding from budget cuts and added $15 million in the 2014 budget to make more 4-year-olds eligible for the preschool program. Keeping that $15 million in the budget means more than 4,400 additional 4-year-olds, children from low income families, will be able to attend preschool. The increase would result from raising income eligibility from 150% to 160% of the federal poverty rate. This is a small but welcome step toward our next goal: moving eligibility up to 200% of the poverty rate. The budget is now in the House, where different subcommittees are looking at different pieces of it. What we need to do right now is get in touch with the members of the Budget Subcommittee on Elementary/Secondary Education to share with them how important preschool is and the need to expand the eligibility. An additional $15 million investment in preschool will give Kentucky a return of a more educated workforce and reduced costs related to crime, education and social welfare programs. Please contact one or all of the members of the House Budget Review Subcommittee on Primary/Secondary Education. If you know one of the members or live in his or her district, please consider calling the legislator for a personal conversation or leaving a message on the legislative hotline. Message: 1. Protect preschool funding in the budget. 2. Increase the eligibility rate for preschool from 150% to 160% of poverty by including the proposed $15 million additional funding, beginning in FY 2014. 3. Preschool is an investment in our children, our education system and our future workforce. Send an email or call the message line at 800-372-7181. House Budget Review Subcommittee on Primary/Secondary Education Rep. Derrick Graham (Chair), Frankfort Rep Will Coursey (Vice Chair), Benton Rep. Dennis Horlander (Vice Chair), Shively Rep. Rick Rand, (Chair, House Appropriations and Revenue Committee), Bedford Rep. Carl Rollins, Versailles Rep. Bam Carney, Campbellsville Rep. Ted Edmonds, Jackson Rep. Charles Miller, Louisville Rep. Rick Nelson, Middlesboro Rep. John Will Stacy, West Liberty We will send additional Action Alerts as the budget progresses through the House and Senate. Many more messages will need to be sent to keep preschool in the budget!
