Calls and Letters Needed for the SCHIP Override Vote!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear CAN Coordinators:
Yesterday, President Bush
vetoed the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), which would have
provided health insurance to 10 million children. Soon after the veto,
Congressional leadership vowed an attempt to override the president's veto."Never
has it been clearer how detached
President Bush is from the priorities of the American people," declared Senate Majority
Leader Reid.
"With today's veto, President Bush has turned his back on America's
children and he stands alone." House
Majority Leader Hoyer, who said an attempt to override the veto will
probably be made in two weeks, called Bush's action
"incomprehensible."  Now the
bill will be sent back to Congress for the override vote, which will require
2/3 of those voting in both the House and Senate to override the veto.
Because of this impending override veto,
it is critical to garner as much support in the House and Senate as possible,
especially for the members of Congress who originally voted against SCHIP.
Please activate your networks and
encourage your members to call the Senate and House offices and write letters on
CEC's Legislative Action Center [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=5wqahfcab.0.rctchfcab.uyqi69bab.0&ts=S0289&p=http%3A%2F%2Fcapwiz.com%2Fcek%2Fissues%2Falert%2F%3Falertid%3D10390086]and
ask for their vote for the SCHIP
override. You can find your Senators' office phone numbers by clicking here [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=vq6b5ecab.0.0.uyqi69bab.0&ts=S0280&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cec.sped.org%2FContent%2FNavigationMenu%2FPolicyAdvocacy%2FLegislativeActionCenter%2Fdefault.htm&id=preview].
CEC appreciates everyone's efforts over
the past two weeks, and we ask for your continued support as we continue to
advocate for Medicaid reimbursement for children with disabilities.
Sincerely,
CEC Policy and Advocacy Services
