Year after year, education remains critically under funded -- especially
programs that focus on children and youth with disabilities and/or gifts and
talents. This year is no different.

That is why we are writing you today. We need your help in gathering
stories that show how critical federal funding is for IDEA and the Javits
gifted and talented program for CEC's 2008 Federal Outlook for Exceptional
Children. The Outlook is a CEC publication that is distributed to every
Congressional office and the Department of Education to show policymakers
the impact of federal funding on children/youth with disabilities and/or
gifts and talents.

We have only received a handful of success stories (wonderful stories at
that!) -- and we need more stories from many different constituencies
(special education teachers, administrators, higher education personnel,
parents, related service personnel, paraprofessionals) and across the United
States.

Stories from a variety of perspectives and locations are necessary to show
that the under funding of special and gifted education impacts all working
and caring for children and youth with disabilities and/or gifts and talents
throughout the ENTIRE country.

Specifically, we are looking for stories that highlight the accomplishments
of a child/youth in the following programs:

IDEA Part C - Early Intervention Program for children birth - three years of
age
IDEA Part B - State and Local Grant Program for children three - 21 years of
age (including Part B, Section 619 for 3-5 year olds)
IDEA Part D - Support Programs for IDEA including personnel preparation
programs, technical assistance, demonstration projects, parent information
centers, etc.
Javits Program - Grants to states and localities to support gifted
education: In 2005, 14 grants were awarded to the following states: AZ, CA,
CO, IA, MD, MA, MN, NH, NY (3), OH, TX, WY. Unfortunately, due to funding
cuts, no new grants were awarded in 2006. For information on specific
programs, visit: http://www.ed.gov/programs/javits/index.html

CEC has developed a story template and have included a success story that
appeared in last year's edition of the Outlook, to view, visit:

play.cfm&CONTENTID=7626

Please forward this message on to members of your network. For additional
information, visit past CEC Public Policy Updates:

te=/TaggedPage/TaggedPageDisplay.cfm&TPLID=29&ContentID=4857

Please feel free to contact me if there is anything I can do to assist in
your efforts.

Many thanks,
