Good morning. I am forwarding a message from CEC regarding education
funding.

Sarah Hadden
DEC Governmental Relations Committee

Forwarded message from CEC:

This morning, the Labor-HHS-Education subcommittee -- part of the larger
House Appropriations Committee -- set forth funding recommendations for
health, labor and education programs in a process Congress calls a "markup".
Unfortunately -- though not surprisingly -- the subcommittee recommended an
increase in IDEA of just $100 million (see breakdown below) and eliminated
the Javits program for students with gifts and talents. As the Senate and
the House continue the appropriations process, we will need the full support
of the CAN Coordinators to alert their networks and take action to
compliment CEC's efforts on Capitol Hill.

Last year -- due to your efforts -- we were able to preserve funding for the
Javits program, though the program was cut by $1.3million. This year we are
facing another uphill battle and will need the full backing of the CAN
Coordinators to preserve funding again this year. Please urge members of
your network to take action on a new letter on CEC's Legislative Action
Center "Tell Congress to Fund the Javits Program for Students with Gifts and
Talents", http://capwiz.com/cek/home/ .

Over the next few days/weeks, we will alert you to specific issues that we
will need your help with. We anticipate some additional activity in the
House next week and will provide you with specific information as that
becomes available.
